"Wanted to try the new 490i model radar…. Wish I would have just bought another 700i. They changed the power cord so I will have to find the new style cable kit to tie into the power on my rearview mirror. Seems like it alerts more but goes silent after the 3rd beep but screen still shows radar detected in area."

"I daily drive a Valentine One Gen2, so I’m very used to premium radar detectors and had pretty high expectations going into this. I picked up the Cobra RAD 490i expecting a decent budget detector, but after spending real time with it, I was honestly surprised by how refined and capable it feels for the price. The biggest thing that stood out immediately was how usable it is in actual day-to-day driving. A lot of detectors in this price range either false constantly or feel outdated, but the RAD 490i feels modern, responsive, and well tuned. Filtering around newer vehicles with blind spot monitoring systems is surprisingly good, so it stays relatively quiet during normal driving while still giving strong and reliable alerts when it matters. Ka band performance on the highway was consistently solid and gave plenty of warning time during everyday driving. Obviously ultra high-end detectors still have advantages in maximum range and additional enthusiast-level features, but the RAD 490i honestly gets much closer to that higher-end experience than most people would expect at this price point. The feature set is also extremely impressive for the money: - USB-C connectivity - Bright OLED display - Bluetooth + Drive Smarter app integration - Front and rear LaserEye detection - Firmware update support - Digital signal processing - Extreme mode capability - Compact and modern design What I like most about the RAD 490i is that it doesn’t feel like a “cheap” detector when using it every day. Startup is fast, menus are simple, the display is clean and easy to read, and overall it feels polished and easy to trust. One thing I would personally like to see is an optional suction cup mount. The included adhesive mount is actually very secure and premium feeling, but since I switch between multiple vehicles often, a suction cup option would make moving the detector between cars easier. Overall, Cobra did a really good job with the RAD 490i. It performs well, feels modern, and offers a level of usability and refinement that honestly makes it stand out in this price range. Definitely recommended."
"I purchased the RAD 480i specifically for a long road trip a few months ago. I then also used it for daily driving for several more weeks. The 480i did a good job of filtering out false alerts and was actually not that intrusive. When Cobra announced the 490i, I read the marketing material and the white paper and I decided it was worth the update, and that I would move the 480i to my wife's car. The first thing I noted is that the 490i is NOT filtering out things the 480i seemed to. The advertised "less noise" and "quieter ride" is not what I'm experiencing. In my daily drives the 490i is 'finding' much more to warn me about. This could be due to the advertised extended range and better sensitivity. But this level of improvement contradicts the "quieter ride" claim. The 490i has already saved me from a ticket. It did indeed sense a radar on a suburban road giving me time to slow down (I wasn't intentionally speeding). So for this reason alone I'm happy with my purchase. I will keep the 490i in my truck."
"I’ve been using the Cobra RAD 490i for a little while now, and it feels like a solid upgrade from older models. Mounting it in my car was quick, and I've found its adhesive mount to be more reliable than suction cup mounts. The unit itself looks good, and has a USB-C connection. Pairing it with the DriveSmarter app and Android Auto was easy, and having alerts show up on my car’s screen makes it much more convenient to use while driving. The long range detection works really well, especially on highways, giving plenty of warning before you even see anything ahead. The alerts are clear and easy to understand once you get familiar with them. It strikes a great balance between being effective and not overly complicated, which I really appreciate compared to some pricier models. Overall, it’s a dependable, easy to use radar detector that works especially well for highway driving and daily commuting."

"I’ve been using the Cobra RAD 490i for several weeks now, and I’m extremely impressed with its performance. The detector provides excellent range and consistently alerts me well in advance of speed monitoring locations, giving me plenty of time to adjust my driving. The connection to the iRadar app is a great feature, providing real-time alerts and additional situational awareness from other users on the road. The display is easy to read, the voice alerts are clear, and the unit is simple to set up and customize. I especially appreciate the false alert filtering, which helps reduce unnecessary notifications in town while still maintaining reliable detection on the highway.
